Here's the mod request En Dabuwya made a long time ago, now come into reality :).
You can now craft Dyes around leather... DRUMROLL...
to make colored armor :D. (Recipe is now shapeless)
Credit goes to En Dabuwya for the idea and the textures, he's the true mastermind behind the mod, I'm just the code monkey :3.

Known bug: Green leather nametag is shown as gray leather. Not to worry, it's green :)
EDIT: this is not compatible with optifine, but it is with MCpatcher

It had been added for 1.4, hence it hasn't been updated and is now discontinued... Unless you want to use it on 1.3.1 of course

It's not necessary for 1.4.2, as 1.4.2 has dyable armour

Looks like it's ended up being quite popular. You want another concept with textures and sprites? Or do you have an idea that you need an artist for?

Ok. Mind you, I do have an awesome idea that's probably as simple as this, just MASSIVE. And I'm talking over 20,000 sprites/textures so far massive. The coding would be simple, just would take a while, and the way it's structured, you could do it bit by bit, releasing it as you went. Just let me know if I should find someone else to make this and/or you need me for any other mods.

Well I downloaded,opened it with Z-zip,put the contents into my minecraft.jar(which had modloader)(META INF not included),and tried to make a chestplate with the lapis dye and it did not work.

I'm sorry to hear it did not work. Did you by chance have any other mods installed in the jar file? This mod isn't very compatible.
Either way, it's going to officially come out in 1.4 so no worries.
