Level 52 : Grandmaster Modder

josephandjake and kieranvs present...

With this mod, grass becomes trampled if it gets repeatedly walked on by animals or players. As the grass gets more and more trampled, its appearance decays from grass, to dirty grass, to dirt, and eventually to stone.

The path details are overlayed onto a standard grass texture, so paths look natural in every biome!

Download and install Minecraft Forge version 1060 for 1.7.2.
Place the Footpaths jar file in your /mods folder.

Thanks josephandjake & kieranvs!
Works with 1.7.10 but the blocks turn invisible instead of changing texture...can you please fix this bug? I would really like to use mod as it adds a nice athetical look to the blocks...

love it, do u have a server for 1.7.2?, Love to play with u.
I like it, but I'd suggest making the footpaths a photo overlay rather than a whole other block. The blocks changing into footpath blocks is kinda game-breaking for an aesthetic mod. It's a great idea, but needs to be ironed out.
It's far easier for us to make a new block with a changing texture than to try and render a new texture onto a grass block. Besides, when you break the block, it drops dirt. When you use silk touch, it still drops dirt. There is no vanilla way of getting the footpath block, so why does it matter if the block type changes?
Confliction with other mods, various glitches, ETC. The new block causes wierd bugs with other mds. The new block ruins sugarcane farms. The new block is naught but trouble.
Hmm, I didn't think about mod confliction... We'll look into it, thanks :)

is it client side? / Can I use it on servers?
It works on multiplayer fine, but it needs to be installed on the client and the server (which needs to be a forge server).
This is a forge-Modification. We published a Bukkit Plugin like this.
This looks so cool! Can you please make it for MC 1.6.4! I want to add this to my world that I use all my other favorite mods for 1.6.4!!!!

Can you add a creatice mode only grass block that doesn't get turned into cobble when stepped on? And can you add an option to make the grass automatically regrow when it hasn't reached a certain stage yet?
This is great, and I bet that it'd be super useful on any RolePlaying maps/servers.
Also, this is something I've been looking for a long time.
Diamonds to you!

If I didn't hate the hassle involved in downloading mods, I would totally get this

(woohoo looking at a mod on PMC for the first time)
Diamond, this mod is AMAZING. although you should try to only enable grass, sand, and gravel to weather. Because the floor of my house is dirt now.
Oh wow, I am really impressed by this :o go you! :D

Very original (and cool) idea for a mod. Diamonded.
This is really clever! I've always wanted to see something like this implemented into Minecraft! Good job!
Walked on top of my house and it turned into dirt :c

I am considering making this in plugin form now :)
To do that you'd have to just make the ground go from dirt/grass -> cobble -> gravel!

But I would love to see this, I would use it on an upcoming server I am working on

This is a really awesome idea!  I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm wondering:
In your animal farms/pens, will the ground pretty quickly turn to stone if it was grass? Seems like it'd force some realism of having to move your herds of sheep around and the like, so you can continue to get wool.
Is there any mechanic to slowly, automatically turn grass-turned-stone blocks back to being "overgrown" with grass if no one walks over it for a while? Is that even possible?

I got part of the answer to my question on the minecraft forum, but I'm still wondering if it could be automatic regrowth just by having the custom block do the same kind of checks that dirt blocks do to see if they should become grass blocks. Also now more worried that it will interfere with sheep eatting grass since it replaces blocks.
To answer your questions, the paths are a custom block so it doesn't technically become dirt, gravel or cobble. For this reason, no, the grass doesn't spread.
Also, FYI you can use seeds to reverse the process. (just right click with some seeds in your hand)
That might just be one of the STUPIDEST things ive heard on PMC.
Thanks! Yes, the animals will churn up the ground fairly quickly, faster if you have more of them and heavier mobs cause it to change faster (eg horses and cows). We left sheep out because we knew they eat grass to grow wool. And yes, as you discovered you can use seeds to 'neaten' the path again. It is possible for the blocks to grow back, but honestly we want them permanent - imagine discovering an ancient path on an old server and following it to discover some secret :P

Thanks for the response :D

About the sheep thing, could you have your custom block treated as grass (so the sheep can eat off it) until it reaches the 9th stage, maybe? Or is it too difficult to do something like that? I just think it'd be cool if you couldn't eternally keep your sheep in the same spot without putting some seeds down to keep the grass going.

I thought of another couple questions:
1) What block do you get back when you break these? Is it always dirt or do you have levels in there that give you grass (with silk touch), dirt, or cobble depending on the stage?
2) If you uninstall this mod, will you have holes in the ground scattered around because the custom block will be missing?

Sorry for being a nuicance with the questions. My computer is giving me some issues so I can't just install and try it right now. T_T
(To the sheep point) Yes, that is possible. Perhaps we'll implement that some time.
1) At the moment, you always get dirt (even when you use silk touch)
2) Yes, you get holes scattered around, because it's a modded block.

this is such a simple original idea, its awesome!!

question: support for mcpc/cauldron forge?
What's the license of this? I'd love to chuck it in a public modpack.
That's absolutely fine, on several conditions. Please link back to either this page or our minecraft forum page. Also, could you send the link when it's done so we can check it out? Thanks for showing an interest :)
How has no one done something like this before? I always love to see people taking these small ideas and making mods out of them. Those little touches that make the world of Minecraft feell all that much more alive are the kinds of mods that I love.

Say, any chance that you would backport this to 1.6.4? I feel like this would be an excellent addition to a modpack I'm working on.
We were surprised that it hadn't been done too! It really does make a difference when playing, as you can even use the light paths to 'track' players and follow their tracks back to their bases!

Though we'd love to backdate this, it is a lot of work :/. It will perhaps be considered if many people request it. Sorry!
Yes please backdate this to 1.6.4! I only use 1.6.4 for modded MC at the moment as many greats have not updated!
S'alright. :3
Still a great mod either way. This will definitely make it into the pack if and when it updates to 1.7, and will certainly be used in my personal modded play.
