The ALCO Century 628 was a six-axle, 2,750 hp diesel-electric locomotive. A total of 186 C628s were built between December 1963 and December 1968. There were 135 C628s built for US railroads, 46 C628s built for Mexican railroads, and five C628s for Australia.
The Chicago & Northwestern operated 30 C628, bought from the NW in May 1973. These units operated out of Escanaba Michigan on heavy iron ore trains and occasionally freight sevice though the upper Wisconsin. Being the last Alcos in main line service after their builder went out of business in 1969, these units would be displaced by EMDs on the ore service in the late 1980s with most if not all units scrapped.
