The T-62 is a soviet main battle tank (MBT) that entered service in 1961. it was the first tank in operational service to have a smoothbore gun (115mm UT-5S) which allowed it to fire the new apfsds round. The T-62 was based on a lengthened t-54/55 chassis with a new turret. The T-62 was not meant to replace the t-54/55, but rather to complement it, a major drawback of the T-62 over the T-54/55 was its much higher cost. Later on in its service the T-62 was modernized to the T-62M standard which included a laser rangefinder and add on composite armor. T-62Ms have seen service in Afghanistan, Ukraine, and other wars in modern history.
