The T-72 was designed to be a lower cost complement to the T-64, due to its high contest and reliability issues. It was created by a rivaling design bureau at Uralvagonzavod. The T-72 entered service in ~1973, becoming the second most mass produced tank after the T-54/55 with 25,000+ made. Many variants of it have been made by many operators around the world, it is also the basis for many vehicles such ARVs, bridge layers, BMPT Terminator, and even APCs.

Modernization of T-72B1 (T-72B without ATGM capability) with thermal optics for gunner and CITV. New engine and all around cameras are also installed. No improvements are made to the armor of the vehicle
