The Antwerp Central Station, sometimes called the "Middenstatie" or "Spoorwegkathedraal" (Railway Cathedral), was opened in 1905. The building is composed of a monumental steel roof over the platforms and a stone building in an eclectic style. The station was recently renovated and in 2007 a tunnel was opened under the station and part of the city. Antwerpen-Centraal station is no longer a head-end station (a station where all trains have to turn around). In 2009, the American magazine Newsweek ranked it as the fourth most beautiful station in the world.
The build was made in creative and then recreated in survival mode. It took around 3 weeks to complete.
