Higher Quality .mp4 and Render Details
Rendered in Blender 2.79's Cycles. All of the materials are just simple Principled Shades except for the stained glass, which are a mix of the Glass, Translucent, and Emission Shaders. A simple vignette was added afterwards. Render time: ~4 hours for 64 frames.
Creation Process
100% completed in Minecraft on the Builder's Refuge Server, using WorldEdit, VoxelSniper, and GoPaint. Blender was not used this time until rendering renders, after the fact.
I started with a smaller version of the spine using a ball brush, which I smoothed up and scaled up by 200%. Then I shaped the arms and legs, as well as the frame for the wings, and hand-sculpted the claws, and scaled everything up by 200% again. I was originally planning to build slightly smaller than the Aquatic Dragon I built last month, but the dragon still manages to be around 200 blocks tall. At this time, I smoothed everything out again, and began using a spline brush to form the wing membrane.
I colored the dragon in a similar method as the Aquatic Dragon, with a gradient of red this time. I separated the head and rotated it on the y-axis, for symmetry purposes and detailed the shapes of the head and eyes. Finally, I used multiple spike brushes for the fur.
Overall, I am very please with how this build turned out. I am especially pleased with the eyes, which follow the viewer as they approach from the left or right. From the right it holds a suspicious glare, lining up with the fact it holds its arm protectively around the basket, while the left can be interpreted as bored or stern.
