The armor of the BMP-1 covered the crew and troops from the fire of large-caliber machine guns, as well as shell fragments and mines, the squat hull allowed the use of terrain folds for shelters on the battlefield. Since the car turned out to be quite light, the use of a powerful engine gave an unprecedented indicator for that time: the specific power was 23 hp per ton, which allowed the BMP-1 to literally "fly" even on rough terrain. The mechanic-driver of the car received not control levers, but a convenient steering wheel.

The main weapon of the BMP-1 is the 2A28 "Grom" smoothbore gun, developed on the basis of the LNG-9 recoilless gun. The gun is equipped with a semi—automatic loading mechanism that allows you to maintain a high rate of fire - up to 8-10 rounds per minute. The sighting range was 1300 m — not much, but we must remember that IFVs were not intended for anti-tank combat, their guns had to destroy targets that accidentally "survived" in the fire of artillery training and were not affected by the first wave of attacking tanks. To combat enemy tanks at long distances, the 9K14 "Malyutka" guided weapons complex was intended. The armor penetration of cumulative warheads of gun shots and guided missiles was enough to hit any NATO tank of that time head-on, not to mention the sides and stern.
