the spawn egg doesn't spawn a cannon for me. am I doing it wrong? i crafted the eggs and then used the egg on the ground

Give yourself a command block with the command:
/give @p command_block

Then, copy the command from here (ctrl + c), and paste it into the command block (ctrl + v)

Finally, activate the command block with a button, redstone block, or whatever you want.
