The M/S Carnival Destiny debuted as the world's largest cruise ship. She was the first cruise ship to break a gross tonnage of 100,000 gross tonnes. She also launched a new era of shipbuilding and design, giving way to a design that has been used on over 15 different ships.
In 2013, however, she was refurbished and gave way to the Carnival Sunshine. While she is by no means the largest cruise ship afloat, she did set another record-- the world's most expensive and expansive revitalization of a ship. This cost $165 Million at the time. While today, she is no longer Destiny, She will always be a trail blazer to the cruise industry.
The Carnival Destiny's design was actually a substitute for the late Pinnacle project, which was an ambitious design by Carnival Corporation and Joe Farcus. Due to the increased cost of the ship, it was decided to divert to this design, which was then known as "Next Generation". Next Generation turned out to truly define the cruise industry for the late 20th and 21st century, and brought with it many innovations, such as plentiful balconies, expansive public spaces, large passenger rooms, and much much more.
Personally, I've actually sailed on the Carnival Destiny in 2006, which was my first ever cruise. We sailed out of San Juan and visited Aruba, Barbados, St. Thomas, and Dominica.
This model was built in 1.5:1 Scale, which means it is 50% larger than it would be if it were 1:1 scale. She is also built in the 1996 version, which explains the retro pool deck and lacking of some balconies.
