You arise from the desolate ruins of what would have once been considered as an architectural work of art. As you step out, taking a breath of fresh air after your previous adventure, you begin to look around...Unbeknownst to you, you have stepped into a broad land of not only adventure, but also danger and treachery.

In this land lies 'Castle Ironheart', and as you peer over the walls of a pristine courtyard, gazing upon it's height, you consider turning back to spend your remaining days wallowing in the depths of the earth, these depths that you have all but explored.

However, it seems that you may have just one adventure left in you yet...
You reconsider once again, step through the gates and progress to 'Castle Ironheart'.

Introduction
So hey there people,
This map is far from finished, however, over the past few days I have been progressing very well! After having seen so many maps out there, I've often thought about having a shot myself, and so I have been. I've been learning all sorts of techniques and have many features planned. I simply want to make a good map that everyone will enjoy while also providing a gripping story within Minecraft, ensuring that I utilize every mechanism and feature that's out there as best as is possible to give you, the player, a wonderful adventure that will hopefully remain in your mind's "C:MinecraftAwesome Adventure Maps" file-path for, well, at least a week.

This thread is slightly over-zealous on my part, but, I'm excited, very excited about how this map will turn out. Mainly, I want to keep a log and also notes on this map as I build it, uploading screenshots and such for comparison. However, I would be lying if I said I didn't want to gain some sort of acknowledgement for creating this map.

Anyway, here it begins. I've been building it for 1-2 weeks now and progress seems to be quick despite some setbacks. I initially started another map project but was too ambitious. Now that I've limited the size of the map and contained myself within a specified region, I'm able to focus less on size and more on features. Quality over quantity, as my English teacher used to say. I do consider this map a debut map. Some parts of the map I will be hesitant to disclose, merely because I realise this project will take me a while (it's pretty much solo) and am worried that someone may take an idea, release a map first then claim credit for said idea. This isn't me being arrogant and thinking "my ideas are so good", it's just me being very cautious. This is the internet, after all.

The Map
"Well! That's all fine and good! But what is this about?! What is it?!! Tell me!" You ask rather aggressively, I must say...I'm a demotivated game-design student and am very interested in how creating a map within a game is similar to programming a game itself. You have to take into account many things, many of the things that you would when designing a game from scratch. I'm heavily influenced by a great few games and am of course an avid gamer. Many of the features of the games that I've played are features that I intend to incorporate in one way or another.

'Castle Ironheart' is to be a vanilla map (this means: without mods) that will at least provide 2 hours of gameplay, but I use that time-frame very loosely. I'm aiming for 4-6 hours, realistically, with everything having been completed (no, not tedious 'item collection' tasks...Re: Pretty much every game in history).
I currently have no idea how many bosses or tasks this map will contain, as I'm fleshing everything out and building the actual map - The map itself is a valley with multiple connecting ravines, the castle will lie in the main valley but through a natural course of evolution, players are expected to explore and at times, even with reluctance and fear, will have to.

I am building it all entirely by myself with no outside help.

Plans
Here is a list of current plans be they buildings or mechanisms that I am willing to share, everything you see may have been created already, may be work-in-progress or may just be a thought in my mind that's intended for future. One thing is certain, these ideas that I list are most likely final through one way or another, I probably won't reconsider. Ideas are including but not limited to:
  • 4 Towns - Each containing quests and exciting features.

  • 2 Bosses - Fully scripted, edited.

  • Railway system - A dungeon in itself. Can be further used as transport across the map. Simple.

  • RPG-like experience - Classes, levelling up, co-op gameplay, shops (+ other secret items for sale, quests, custom items/mobs.

My Personal Tools
This is a compilation of tools/mechanisms that I use to make this map as straightforward and easy as I think it can be. This section may contain things such as programs I use, tools for such programs, stuff like that.
  • MCEdit
  • Bukkit Server - With WorldEdit

I don't use many tools, nor do I abuse them excessively. I absolutely love WorldEdit and it's helped to make this map possible. I wouldn't have the patience any other way. All creations and buildings are my own or properties of those that helped make them. External help will get credit for their inclusion in this project, if, of course, such help is used.

Post-Notes

Thanks for taking the time to read everything! If you have any questions or ideas for this map, I'll happily hear you out and may even include you in the design process itself, assuming you wish to help - Gaining specified credit once the map is finished.

Leave me a note, a message, whatever. I love communication and support.

Thank you,

Dan.

5 Update Logs

Update #5 : by UnluckyStorm 09/29/2013 6:53:01 pmSeptember 29, 2013 @ 10:53 pm UTC

Started work on a new valley and more terrain. The new valley is actually bigger than the first valley, which is a very cool thing! Means I can add a lot more, though I intend for it to be a place of awe as opposed to content, i.e, somewhere immersive to be in but not full of infinite details.

Plans for multiple quests (one of which is delightfully sadistic of me.

Plans for multiple mini-games. (One WELL in the works)

Plans for [SPOILER] [SPOILER] in multiple locations.

Castle is going well. I've posted new screenshots. To give a sense of scale as to how massive the castle will be, the building that I've posted is the gatehouse, i.e, the 'small' guard-building you enter to get into the castle. It has 4 floors and will have a [SPOILER] in the very top floor, as well as a slight obstacle you'll have to get through to tackle the castle.

God this is taking SO long! Just today, I started work on it again.
The fact that I'm doing it completely solo is enough, but my word is this hard.

Recently started work on Castle Ironheart (loosely based on the real Castle Neuschwanstein), the gatehouse is complete but this place will be a labyrinth of trials and barriers that you'll need a real amount of skill to beat. Due to my sadism as a map creator, I like to provide a challenge. E.g, archery minigames that you can play blind to unlock big rewards. I'm also going to make good use of 1.7, though I'm not ready to implement all the redstone yet, but it'll be nice to have an option to do something other than terrain and buildings.

Along with working on the castle, I've expanded the map quite substantially so that there's a better feeling of exploration. The fact that this map is on flatland (stupid choice on my part) means that, to me, it feels quite limited. So I can hopefully emulate a larger world by providing more surrounding hills for players to explore.

To sum it all up:
  • Archery mini-game in the works.
  • Castle newly started.
  • Expansive terrain, adding more valleys and mountains.
  • Idea for another mini-game (Lava-tower, make of that what you will).

I can't promise I'll keep working on this, but while I have the motivation, I will. If I can finish the terrain soon, it means that all I'll have to worry about is buildings/towns/cities/castle plots/secret caves, etc..

I've just finished yet another valley...For the castle alone.
I'm toying with the idea of a large body of water or some sort of dry area...What might that be I wonder!

I really want it to just be done...Haven't been working on it for quite a while, motivation is difficult and I get lazy easily. :P Hopefully I'll start things up again soon. Most of the world itself is completed, then I need to fill it, after which I'll be adding contraptions and machinery.

Many apologies for the poor quality of writing throughout the update logs! It's usually just a brief description of what's being worked on, and due to the fact that when I'm writing up these logs I'm also working on my map and listening to podcasts, I don't pay much attention to the quality. If you're confused however, ask me for clarity! (:
