Castle Sternburg started as a mound of dirt that was built into a mound of dirt on top of another mound of dirt. Then a palisade crowned that mound. That palisade burned and the ashes made another small mound atop the other two. Now stone rests atop the mound forcing both visitor and invader to walk the entire base of the mound, flanked by walls and towers.
