The Chessie System GP9 was a classic diesel-electric locomotive used by the railroads that made up the Chessie System during the 1970s and 1980s. Built originally by Electro-Motive Division, the GP9 produced 1,750 horsepower and became one of the most successful road-switcher locomotives in North America. Many GP9s operating under the Chessie System were inherited from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and Western Maryland Railway.


These locomotives wore the famous Chessie System paint scheme of bright yellow, blue, and vermillion, along with the iconic “Chess-C” kitten logo on the nose. GP9s were commonly used in yard switching, local freight service, and branch line operations because of their reliability and versatility. Even as newer locomotives entered service, many GP9s continued working well into the CSX era, proving their durability and importance in American railroad history
