It's a rather simple design but I haven't seen it before. It uses the fact that a minecart with furnace will be self propelling when fuelled with coal and a glitch in which the hit boxes of minecarts can partially stick in walls. The downside to this is that it takes 3 minutes before the minecart with furnace would not be self propelling any more (accordingly to the minecraft wiki, tested it my self and seem right).
It can easily be hidden, for instance by placing a water source block in the hole (such as natural spawned waterfalls), let it blend in with the wall decoration (indoors) or use the farmland trick (see video).

But Wow, you've actually found a whole nother specific block detector, made a much more secretive base entrance ! ( Since its owner needs the coal Key ) And Silent-Interface for Redstone.
