Yes, I am aware I did this in creative and didn't spend much time on it, but I got a little bored and felt like I'd make myself a tribute to the valued Creeper!

how did the leaves not fall?

It was done in creative mode. You can place any block, even leaves, where ever you want. I don't believe leaf decay is present on creative mode.
