On the 6th of June, 1944, 156,000 Allied Soldiers landed on the shores of Normandy in the largest seaborne invasion in history. Over the past two months or so I have had the opportunity to build but a mere slice of those events, giving a snapshot into what the D-Day invasion was like.
Juno Beach NAN white sector was a 500 metre stretch of beach in front of Bernieres sur mer. Dozens were killed and even more were wounded, but by the end of the day, the town had been taken and the first steps into Western Europe by the Allies had been taken, marking the beginning of the end of German occupation in France.
In building this map I was surprised to find that most of the buildings that had been present on the day of the invasion still stand to this day. Only a few have been torn down for various reasons. Oh yes and the railway that you see in the map doesn't actually exist any more. It was ripped up years ago.
This map is in fact built on a 1:1 scale, so when I say it's accurate, I mean it. It's accurate. That being said, there are some issues with spacing and blocks being weird so I might be missing a house or two. Anyways, this is actually part one of a very large project aimed at recreating the entirety of Juno Beach in minecraft. I have already begun progress on Courseulles-sur-mer, the second major town that the Canadians landed at.
Map was built using the Call to Battle 2 mod. You need to download it to fully enjoy the map.
