Can you survive the dark?

The world is surrounded on all sides by bedrock, blocking out the sun. You only have 10 torches at your disposal. Mobs will spawn in the dark, and there's no way out. How long can you survive in the darkness?

I tried playing this with render distance on short, and I didn't last 2 minutes. XD
