What is a flowfield?
Simply put, it's a "field" (grid, array, etc) of values that tell something how to move.
If you use something like Perlin noise, you can make the movement very smooth and if you trace a point/block as it moves through the field you can get some amazing patterns.
This clip shows the noise values with wool colours, and the how the gold block moves through the field:
