The Fully Automatic Ghast-Powered AFK Tree Farm!

Largely created by Eease and gerrybrano but with help from the rest of TechniCube, the idea was to take the tree farm and add a different sort of automation that’s never before been seen to this extent. While most auto-tree farms that exist contain withers, we at TechniCube found that a bit too simplistic and easy for our taste.


We set ourselves the challenge of building a farm designed around automatically growing, farming and harvesting trees and all that they drop (apples, saplings and of course wood) by using the ghast and its awesome power. 


There are four main components of this build; the ghast, which harvests the wood, the player, which stands in a certain spot and plants the saplings, the bonemeal system, which bonemeals the saplings into trees, and the collection system for of all the products. There is also the option that if you build it near a skeleton spawner you can collect bones at the same time and more easily refill the Bonemeal system. 


So how exactly is this AFK? Well, the system is designed to supply you with saplings while you AFK. The spot you stand in is situated such that you can both plant the saplings (using some key or bind that you can just put something on to hold it down) and the ghast can see you. The ghast is placed in such a way that it will try to attack you but instead of hitting you, will destroy the wood and allow the collection system to harvest it for you. The hoppers then collect the drops and put them into a storage system for when you return. A huge array of pistons and redstone is setup in such a way to move the wood from where you grew it from a sapling to where the ghast’s fireball will appear. Everything is placed in an exact position and was all planned out and created using Minecraft’s mechanics to their fullest potential.


The machine itself is very precise in the way it needs to be built making this the 'hard' part. For a toutorial on the ‘fun’ part (catching and placing the ghast) watch this video by TechniCube member FlipCrafter:

Map Features:

Completed Farm: The world download includes a fully built tree farm with an attached skeleton spawner. To get the farm working, turn the game off of peaceful mode and spawn a ghast in the glass box. Close the box and stand on the pressure plate to begin.




Step By Step Building Instructions: In addition to the video provided above, the world download includes 22 step by step building instructions to help you learn how to build it for yourself.

Farm Systems:





Player Area: Used for the player to stand and AFK, the area has space for the player to stand on a pressure plate that will activate the bonemeal system and the sapling system.





Sapling Area: Space for the sapling to be planted by the player and get automatically grown by the bonemeal system.





Sapling System: System  that drops out sapling into the players inventory to be planted.





Log Transportation System: System of perfectly timed pistons that push logs from the space above the Sapling Area to their final position in the Destruction Chamber.





Ghast Holding Cell: Space that the ghast is trapped in that ensures that the player is seen and fired upon as well as ensuring that the ghast balls are all spawned in the Destruction Chamber.





Destruction Chamber: Blast proof area in which the logs are destroyed and the drops are collected by the Collection System.





Collection System: System of hoppers that catch all log, apple, and sapling drops and transport them to the Chest Area.





Chest Area: The area in which all collected drops are held.
