Background (Winds of War AU)

After the devastating loss of South Haven and the withdrawal of SHSF from the frontlines of the War of Aquisition, the Royal Navy Air Force (RNAF), although it was seeing excellent additions to it’s fleet in fighters, now lacked the support of the pirate Phantom-class Interceptors which had proven to be an excellent tactical asset. With the royal Banshees and Falcons being heavily focused torpedo bombers and air superiority fighters respectively, the royal navy lacked a more versatile aircraft capable of performing both tasks at once - something that their standard warships, with limited fighter compliments, would highly benefit from.

As such, the royal navy threw it’s design teams into the construction of a new ‘Interceptor’ type fighter for the royal navy.
The first design, dubbed the Skylark-class Interceptor, employed the popular ‘Banshee’ hull, and possessed three automatic fireguns and two torpedoes, slightly less grouped than the Banshee’s. This design proved to be successful, and could serve as a standard fighter interceptor that could well compensate for the ‘loss’ of the Phantoms.

Despite the success of the Skylark-class, royal navy engineers recognized the Banshee’s design was starting to show it’s age and, although it was still unquestionably a highly effective, arguably timeless hull, the royal navy air force questionned the idea of starting a new line of fighters with similar characteristics, but with a new, different hull.

This new design would presumably perform better in terms of maneuverability, visibility and possibly speed when compared to it’s more cramped predecessors. The design, based on the design of new dreaded Silver Empire T-166 Heavy torpedo bombers armed with four torpedoes, carried three automatic fireguns and two 3m light torpedoes on a larger design, and although lacking in armor, possessed improved engines that granted it superior speeds. Greater maneuverability and visibility was also achieved thanks to the more spacious design of the fighter, which allowed for less cramped ‘minimalist’ systems, which had been previously noted on the ‘Banshee’ design.

Although the fighters of the ‘Banshee’ type - namely the Falcon, Banshee, Hawk, Skylark and even the old Buzzard-class fighters remained in active service in the royal navy, the new fighter design, finally named Fury-class Interceptor, became an important part of the Royal Navy’s air force, providing new carriers and air bases with a powerful and reliable strike craft, one that could comfortably engage the powerful aviation of the Silver Empire on equal terms.
