Update #9 : by Luna 03/14/2016 5:54:44 pmMar 14th, 2016

- Modified photos slightly
- Terrain overhaul generally complete (Farmlands)
- 2nd borough of Gilendall expanded around city to encompass entirety of area surrounding the city. This is a HUGE area that may end up being split into multiple boroughs. To save time, and because the peasants couldn't afford anything else, the housing has been copypasta'd.
- Added some sewers for player explorable areas.
- Started a Bakery

How does this city sustain itself? Around the city there are barely any farms at all.

If food is mostly being imported from other places then the food prices would be high in that area. I am not sure about you but most people like cheap stuff. Especially the poor. Peasants would not move into this city and with no peasants there is no city. A peasant may be someone nobody cares about but they also are the backbones of a medieval civilization. Peasants are farmers, soldiers, merchants, pretty much every single class in the medieval world. This capital city would have such a bad economy that merchants would not want to trade with it and with no merchants there is not enough food. You need to add more farmlands.

There should be wheat and a windmill to create flour. Then there should be a bakery to turn the flour into bread. There should also be hops growing but they're not in vanilla so if you were to add hops you can use sugar cane. Hops are used in breweries to create beer.

Also you have cannons and trebuchets...Trebuchets are not used in defence but used when attacking and besieging. Another thing is that they are on opposite ends of the medieval era. The cannon is a late medieval weapon whereas the trebuchet is an early medieval weapon. And if that wooden thing on the tower isn't a trebuchet but a catapult it doesn't really matter because the catapult is similar to the trebuchet and was used in the early medieval era like the trebuchet.

You will need to add a stockpile, an armoury, a blacksmith, a barracks, more farms and a lot more houses. If this is a capital city then thousands of people would live here.

I noticed that two towers at the back of the city are almost smaller than the ridge thing they are next to. If you can't see across that thing then you would either raise the towers or just remove them. A pointless tower is an expensive tower.

All good observations! I'm in love with the game stronghold, and have used that as a basis of castle designs. Much of what you have suggested has already been implemented, or will soon be implemented, as inspired by that game!

I hear what you're saying about the farms. My goal here is to add them all at once at the end. I have a couple already built nearby which you can't see from the photos. Although there will be sufficient farm coverage nearby, most of the crops and animal farming will be handled by Taern and shipped throughout Argea. I did consider adding windmill's, Ampleforth and Taern have them already, but I forgot to put it on my "to do" list, so thank you for that.

For your comment about defenses, we decided to add cannons after the fact. We chalk up the mix of defense and siege weapons to the city being under financial stress and needing to use what they have for defenses. There is a very large pirate presence on the continent which has been straining the armies resources, and therefore the siege and defensive weapons have been scattered throughout Argea (the continent) in a desperate attempt to match the firepower of the Pirate groups.

There is already a stockpile, brewery, armory (and barracks nearby), and a blacksmith. They were not mentioned in the post and no photos have been provided yet. A Bakery is a good idea that I missed.

I believe I already considered if you can see over the ridge or not from those rear towers, but I will reassess.

Houses are actively being added outside the currently constructed walls. My goal here is to create "borough's" of the capital city. Although the goal is to keep the city dense, I ran out of vertical and horizontal space within my original city boundaries and thus must expand the housing outwards somewhat.

Great comment! Thank you for taking the time to review and give good insight. You've given me a lot of homework, and I have to update the page to more clearly describe what is not in the photos.

One thing I don't understand is why these people would go back to technology from almost 1000 years ago when desperate.

I wish to thank you for your calm reply. I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with someone angry about every bit of feedback I gave them. ^.^
