The SS Imperia was hastily converted into a troopship in 1917 when the USA entered the war. In order to bring US troops to Europe as fast as possible, only necessary parts were rebuilt or left. After the equipment it drove with maximum speed to America. Once there she was loaded with troops to wait on Roadstead for a convoy. There her depleted coal supply was replenished by the Collier USS Cyclops.
