The Story

It took many months of study, but Steve managed to translate the majority of the writing in the cave. It told of an ancient race of hyper-intelligent beings, who came to this galaxy millennia ago in massive intergalactic vessels. These ships seeded life through the galaxy, including, it would seem, Earth. The writing also said that these beings came to Earth as a final destination, and begun to build their great capital city here. It occurred to Steve that the ancient buildings in the cavern must be remnants of their city. But this meant something else; their ship was probably still here. Steve oversaw the construction of a powerful orbital telescope to search the skies for this ship, and while it took many weeks of effort, it was eventually discovered nestled within the asteroid belt.
Steve knew he had to investigate. It had been many decades since anyway had constructed a ship worthy of such a voyage, but Steve managed to design and build a shuttle capable of getting him there and back. What he might find, he had no idea.

On approach to the ship, he did a routine scan. There was no power source (or at least not one capable of powering such a ship across galaxies), only a small portion of it had atmosphere, and there were very few actual rooms. It took him a long while to figure it out, but he realized this wasn't the complete ship. This was confirmed when he identified what appeared to be a power coupling at one end. This meant that the rest of ship, presumably with the power source and crew modules, had gone. Where? Why? Steve's curious nature demanded answers, and the only place he could find them was in...

The ship
The ship is 2,412,935 blocks in size. It measures 1675 blocks, by 474 blocks, by 141 blocks. In other words: big. The section of the ship Steve found is the back half; containing the "seed pods" of the ship, as well as 8 interplanetary cruisers, powerful weapon systems, a small docking bay (for reconnaissance drones) and a secondary command center (which is also detachable as a shuttle). The seed pods are kept in place by a powerful gravity field, which uses the same technology as the ships' (the cruisers as well) engines.

Miscellaneous (Caution on rant about PMC)

While I have no actuate measure, I believe this took me around 20 hours to build. It was done solo, with a generous application of MCedit.

The texturepack used is SMP's 2263. It's outdated, but MCpatcher has a converter, and is required to use the texturepack under normal circumstances anyway.

Steve's shuttle is also included, as shown in the pictures (nothing too special).

There is also a monowheel built with this style if anyone's interested.

For some reason, no one seems to notice when I build a project like this, but when a famous builder builds something of a lesser standard, it gets twice the attention. I am not trying to diminish other peoples' work, but I merely think this site needs to rethink the way it only gives attention to those at the top, and discourages those at the bottom. And the fact that this project was heartlessly disqualified from the To The Stars Competition for not being on the contest map while the project that won wasn't either is absolutely appalling.

The Second Half
I have started work on the second half of this massive ship. However, I'd like to gain more popularity before I complete and post my work, so my 30+ hours of effort required to build this don't go to waste and are not seen. I have another major project that should be coming out in a few weeks, then if that generates enough attention, I'll complete this. In the meantime, I have a completed engine.

Only 20 hours of work or so? Damn, this looks more like a good 60 hours of exterior work. (If I compare to my Pillar of Autumn spaceship, who took 125 hours for the exterior only... XD)

On another, good job, it looks amazing!!

I work very quickly in Minecraft. For large flat sections I divided them into smaler shapes and filled them all in. I did the same for the large curved sections. I cut corners whever I could, making liberal use of MC-edit's clone tool. Like, only 10% was built by hand. The trick is assembling it all in a way that makes it look good from any distanc- which is why it's important to have strong overall shapes. Just having a strong overall design then detialing it with greeble isn't enough usually, but because this ship is hollow (i.e., it's constructed out of a lot of pipes and secitons with little interiortor), I could get away with have no mid-sized "details".

I wish I could do stuff like this with normal artwork... I'm so terrible with drawing it's embarassing.

I see. ;) P.S: Would you mind having a look at my project? I'm really passionate about it, but it takes months to build.  (when I have time, because of college...)
