Khan Shatyr

Khan Shatyr is the largest shopping and entertainment center in the shape of a 150-meter-high tent, designed by the famous architect Norman Foster. The idea of building this unique structure was initiated by the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, as part of the development of the new capital. The project was completed and opened in 2010 to coincide with Nazarbayev’s birthday.


The building is also an important part of the central urban axis of Astana. It continues the main architectural concept of the city, where a grand boulevard stretches from the Ak Orda Presidential Palace through the Baiterek Monument and further south to Khan Shatyr and the new Linear Park.

This axis forms one of the main symbolic and visual lines of the capital.

Inside, under a transparent dome with an area of 127 thousand square meters, there are shops, restaurants, and the Sky Beach Club water park with a beach (sand from the Maldives, +35°C), a cinema and an amusement park.


The complex includes more than 170 shops, cafés and restaurants. Visitors can find stores of many well-known international and local brands such as Armani Exchange, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Calvin Klein Jeans, Massimo Dutti, Mango, Zara, Timberland, Adidas, Reebok, Oysho and Qazaq Republic.

In addition to shopping, guests can relax in numerous cafés and restaurants, visit the food court, enjoy coffee in popular coffee shops such as Coffee Boom, or spend time in entertainment areas including Chaplin Cinema and the Sky Beach Club indoor beach resort.


Although Astana is often considered a rather harsh and car-oriented environment for pedestrians due to its scale and climate, the area around Khan Shatyr offers a more human-scale urban experience. Here visitors can feel an atmosphere closer to that of European city centers: narrower pedestrian streets, many cafés and terraces, lively public spaces and a constant flow of residents and visitors, which makes the district an active social and recreational hub of the city.


An interesting engineering feature of the construction was the installation of the central mast that supports the entire tent-like structure. During construction, this massive column was gradually raised into position using a special system with real railway rails, which allowed engineers to carefully lift and stabilize the structure before the cable-supported roof was fully assembled.

В процессе строительства эта массивная колонна постепенно поднималась на место с помощью специальной системы с настоящими железнодорожными рельсами, что позволило инженерам аккуратно поднимать и стабилизировать конструкцию до полной сборки крыши, поддерживаемой тросами.
