Ki 61 Fighter

The Kawasaki Ki 61 was a Japanese fighter aircraft, first encounter reports of aircraft claimed it was actually a Messerschitt Bf109, you can see they do look similar..

Although the Ki-61's had the edge over the american p-40 fighters, many ki-61's were bombed on the ground on their own airfields by allied bombers, reducing their numbers massivley and therefore their fighting capabilities.

Some Ki-61's were formed into groups for ramming b-19 bombers at high altitude, any Japanese pilots who somehow survived these pretty much suicidal attacks, would then get another plane and repeat..Until either they died or were too injured to fly..
