Lizard 1697

Before the ''True Frigate'' came about in the 1740s there were three types of frigate, type one two decked frigates, Galley frigates, and the smaller 20-24 gun frigates.

HMS Lizard of 1697 represents these 24 gun ships, Lizard and the members of her group were small being usually under 100' on their gundecks, and usually 250-280 Tons BM, they were small, fast and agle ships, and were successful at guarding convoys and fighting privateers, but these ships being small as they were had drawbacks, the were considered to be ''wet'' ships, because their profile was so low it often allowed the spray of the sea into the living quarters, making it damp and often cold, the lack of a full length orlop meant that crew spaces were regulated to the fore and aft platforms in the hold as well as beneath foc'sil and quarterdeck. as you walk the ship you will find there is not much space for the 110 men she was rated for to eat and sleep.

Lizard herself had a fairly long career, guarding convoys, raiding merchants and fighting privateer's, serving from launch in 1697 until 1714 when she was sold off to the breakers yard.
