St George 1701

Launched in 1701, His Majesty's Ship St George of 90 guns, represented the 2nd rate ship of the line. 2nd rate ships were meant to supplement 100 gun 1st rate ships of the line. 2nd rate ships like St George were rated to carry 90-98 guns and were designed to be slightly smaller and swifter than 1st rates but still to carry some of the heaviest weight of shot afloat.

St George being of the 2nd rate class and a well designed ship was swift and powerful for her size, and led a distinguished service with the Royal Navy, including serving as the flagship for a succession of admirals, and taking part in the noted battle of Malaga and Toulon in 1704 and 1707 respectively.
St George was also present at during the Great Naval Disaster of 1707 when several large fighting ships were lost in a storm including another 2nd rate, HMS Association of 90 guns, St George struck the same group of rocks as the former, but was able to make it off unscathed. St George lasted further years in service but was finally broken up in the mid 1720s.
