UPDATE: June 2nd 2012
This map was created during Minecraft Beta. A lot has changed since then, specifically related to mob spawning characteristics. While still functioning in the current version of the game it no longer produces the kind of output it did in the good old days.

I see no need to update it to function as it would require a complete re-design of the entire system. Beta was really the only time to build such monstrous mob grinders as it made sense then to test the game from my end just to see what it could do.

Now that the full game is released I no longer use creative mode or mods to build such machines. I'd rather do it legit in survival mode...and so should you.

The world save for this project is no longer available

I hope the video and screenshots I produced are enough to satisfy your interests. You don't need a world save for everything. Produce your own original work. It's the only way to learn and improve your crafting. Thanks for your time :)

Awesome job! This has given me so many ideas for making a mob tower! I'm using your basic design (for personal use, I hope you don't mind) and I've improved the spawning floor so it has 52 spots with a piston and 10 spots without a piston, for a grand total of 62 spots per floor. But seriously, thanks for all the ideas! I'm off to make my (hopefully) 120k/hour mob grinder!
Changed specs a bit. Now my tower has 60 spawn-able spots per floor, 4 blocks high per floor. I have only ten floors and it still turns out 2.5k i/hr. If WorldEdit recognizes piston orientation soon then I might scale up and possibly have a contraption to rival yours :)

Can you explain the 'fence kill floor'? I'm sure you said what it is in the video but I can't load YouTube right now for some reason :P

The video is just proof that this thing can haul 100K. Even though fences only look 1 block tall, they count as 1 1/2 blocks. Normally when mobs fall on water it breaks their fall but, water with fences underneath will deal damage as long as the water is flowing and not a source block. It's a gravity trap but, instead of having to collect items where the mobs fall, the water channels the drops to a collection point :)

Ah, clever. Does it work on spiders?

This particular trap excludes the spiders from spawning but, the fence trick works on spiders as long as they don't have anything to grab onto as they're falling.

The schematic is for the whole set-up. Now that you said something, I think I'll add a schematic for just the single tower. :)

Not sure exactly what you mean by collecting the drops? Did you watch the video? Maybe that will help...

Very cool, I really like the grid of towers look. I tried this on mine with a 8x8 grid but it didn't boost the item count much due to the slow killing. It seems that the piston and plate idea for a drop kill is about the fastest you could do. I was also thinking about trying some sort of crushing mechanism to kill them on the spot, not sure how well it would work tho.

After thinking about if for a min I realized the killing would probably not be too hard but moving the drops away would probably prove difficult, unless you shifted the mob off the pressure plate first.
