The game is a fast paced game where the ground behind you slowly dissapears and it is on mineplex which is a 1.7/1.8 server so I can't do banners

I don't know much about Micro Battles, but you should try to add some outside decoration, behind Barriers (/give _Turtlee minecraft:barrier), an invisible wall. If your theme is "underneath", make some cool cave around it, mainly Stone, and a material based off a team (Blue:Prismarine/Obsidian,Red:Netherrack/Granite, etc). Banners and ores help as decoration, just style it to the team, maybe except the ores.
