the way to make this better is the make a simple design, that yeilds medium to high drops, WITHOUT mob spawners to help, that is cheating a little bit

When it comes to legit singleplayer survival worlds or multiplayer servers, you are right there.
But I have good news for you. There is a way to make legit mob grinders on servers with only these materials:
1: Some stacks Cobblestone
2: 8 Water buckets
3: 8 Signs
4: 4 Hoppers
5: 2 Wooden chest's
