The extreme mountains are deadly to attempt to run down the side. So don't attempt.

Survival guide-

1.get starter items

2.get extra wood and saplings

3.build a safe area

4.wait out the night [ optional ] mine cobble

5.try to use any extra wood on making stairs down

6.if you hit a hanging side then dig your way through the stone and continue on the other side

7.make it to the bottom the canyons are so low you should be able to find ores in the sides of the mountain

8.survive (set up a bed)
