I like this idea. It is indeed a much smaller way of displaying decimal values than 7 segment displays.
However even though derp pistons got fixed in one of the snapshots, I still prefer pistonless design. They are silent and do not fail at 1 tick pulses. This is a design I came up with, also posted as a video response.
