The P-51 Mustang was an American fighter plane during World War II and the Korean War that was developed by North American Aviation. Its first flight was on October 26th, 1940 as a prototype and first saw service for the RAF in 1942. During its service with the USAAF, it was used to escort bombers over Germany and was one of the best fighters of the war. It was soon replaced by jet fighters over the course of the Korean War but would be used post-war as civilian warbirds and is also flown for air racing. Mustangs were last retired by the Dominican Air Force in 1984.
