Building it on Paragon Gaming's minecraft server. This is meant to make traversing the server's prime areas easier for non-admins. We want to keep the game at its core, how the developers intend it. So, while we have ample administrators to keep things running and often we will keep the /time day command going while we are around, we want our casual members to be able to play the game as it was intended to be played.

However, this is at its core a server created around building, as any server is. We just want our players to build in a certain environment. The railways will allow our common players to go to the various points in the world of Paragongia without having to walk or have access to /warp or other admin commands.

Oh, and its awesome.

The tracks will initially extend in the 4 primary directions of North, South, East and West. We have highways that move out from our server's spawn location (0,0,0) where the "Spire of Rebirth" is located. The trainstation is located just outside of this, making it easy to access. The rails will run along the pre-existing highways, well above ground, suspended in the air. They are color-coded to easily differentiate each track, but also as a beacon so people can look at the track color and see where they are in relation to them.

Later on, the tracks will be expanded on and sub-routes will be established off of the main track.

4 Update Logs

Update #4: Updated Train Station, Started Adding Security : by EchelonMT 06/16/2011 11:27:37 pmJune 17, 2011 @ 3:27 am UTC

I updated the train station a bit:
  1. Replaced the initial lever system in the station that causes the carts to depart with buttons. I did this begrudgingly as I though the levers looked better, but it was inconvenient to have to make sure your lever was in the off position before placing your cart.
  2. Added a "Rules" bulletin board to the station for riders to abide by and make the experience functional and over all easier for passengers.
  3. I tried adding in some detector rails but they didnt' work out how I wanted them to. /sad

I started to also add regions to the tracks to protect from mobs spawning on them; this was a problem at night. Despite the track being lined with red stone torches, it wasn't enough and mobs would consistently spawn on them and cause problems with riders.

So I am in the process of protecting all sections of the track with regions set to "mob-spawning deny" to keep this from happening, as well as "mobdamage deny" just in case. If you do this to your own track system you have to be sure to include the "vehicle-place allow" flag to the region... here is a list of the parameters im using on these region flags.

  • use allow
  • vehicle-place allow
  • mob-spawning deny
  • mobdamage deny

That should cover your basics. Keep in mind you have to give your region enough room to breath and be expanded later on. Right now I am only giving my track 4 block high ceiling, this should cover it for what I need it for, then I plan on going through and redoing all stops to be more uniform so then I will set individual regions for each stop, I don't want to waste a lot of space with regions at this point.
