Here is a simple test of what it is possible to do in Minecraft using crafter.
This machine simply autocrafts any item/block whose recipe has been typed.

This is more a proof of concept than anything as the goal was to make a infinitely expandable programmable crafter.

To save a recipe, you just have to select one by one the ingredients (in order) as illustrated in the linked video.
If your recipe contains empty slots (any recipe with less than 9 items required), press the empty slot button when the crafting slot is empty.
Let's take the compass as an example. In order you will need to press:

  empty slot > iron ingot > empty slot > iron ingot > redstone dust > iron ingot > empty slot > iron ingot > redstone dust
Then start crafting


The system is resilient to incorrect recipes. In this case, ingredients flow to the output chest safely.
Autocraft can be turned on and off using a lever.


Note that the ingredients can be changed by whatever you want.
