It's pretty efficient (you can put a hopper minecart below the dirt to pick up the drops that get stuck), and really awesome looking.
Also, yes, you do need to use hoppers to support redstone, because they have just the right combination of properties (You can place redstone on top, they aren't solid blocks, and they don't stick to slimeblocks.).
