YES their is a god. I have been trying to find this map ever since the mapstravaganza video went up. And also I'm president of MCC (Minecraft club) in my school and I wanted to assign the members this kind of build, any tips....

Generally when I'm building a big map like this I'll build all the individual bits in another map and use mcedit to move them all once they're finished. Other than that all I can say is try to build something you like otherwise it can get pretty dull. Hope that helps! :)
