The Red Monastery, originally the Monastery of Apa Bishuy is a Coptic Monastery, dating to the 6th Century.

Located near the modern city of Sohag, it was originally a monastic complex, however all that remains today is the main church itself.

The Red Monastery is unique as an extremely rare surviving example of architecture during Byzantine Egypt, and is known for its treasure trove of colorful ancient frescoes.

At some point during Islamic rule, the monks covered the frescoes with a thin layer of mortar, preserving them almost completely intact for us today.

This is a 1:1 scale reconstruction of how the church may have looked when originally built during the around 550 A.D, before the nave and side rooms were destroyed. This build was made in Java version 1.16.

While I've made this build available as a schematic, I'd recommend downloading the world file itself, as I've included many of the surviving frescoes as entities, these won't appear if you download the schematic.

Are you planning on updating the Hagia Sophia build or no?

Should be out before the end of the year hopefully.

Main reason I've been working on these other ones is because I don't wanna be the Hagia Sophia channel. Would get very repetitive

This is maybe the first coptic upload on PMC; at least I found no other project by the coptic tag.

Anyways; it's an interesting building; I am honestly lacking in knownledge about Egyptian/Coptic churches, so I don't want to criticism or praise. Just the question why a wood block as main block for the outer wall?

Ah, well, I wish I could have been the first one with a Coptic build on here. But unfortunately theannihilator2 beat me to it.

As for the choice of wood. Sandstone as the main block is simply much too bright, as the real monastery has a much darker tone on the exterior. Hopefully when 1.19 adds mud bricks, I can use those instead. Stripped birch still retains that sand color, but isn't blindingly bright like sandstone.

Maybe theannihilator2 has built a coptic church fist, but at least you are the first one using this tag :D

Maybe its just the picture I saw on the German Wikipedia when I searched shortly for the building, but on this the outer colour seemes more similar to stone bricks (brick texture and grey colour) - but maybe just not a well picutre.

Also I am a strange kind of builder as I rate the texture of a block higher than the colour; and it is important to me that a house is more or less logical not burnable or completly burnable - that I why I avoid wood blocks for larger creations as main block and that triggers me when I see a structer like your one - even when it is used good and well like you did.

Anyways; I am already glad to see what kind of creation will follow your hands next.
