Description:
The VS-2 ventilation stack served as the central exhaust structure for plant ventilation and gas handling systems for the 2nd & 3rd generation RBMK-1000 reactor design. Shared between paired reactor units, it routed filtered air and process gases from reactor buildings, service compartments and radioactive ventilation systems to a high-elevation discharge point for controlled atmospheric dispersion. Unlike conventional industrial chimneys, the VS-2 was designed for low-pressure ventilation flow rather than combustion exhaust.
Standing at 78.5 meters (257.5 ft) tall, the structure consisted of a steel exhaust tube supported by an external lattice framework. 3rd-generation RBMK-1000 units retained essentially the same VS-2 stack design with the only minor difference being an updated paint scheme. The VS-2 became one of the most recognizable external features of the RBMK-1000 reactor.
