The RMS Marilyn was the sister ship of the RMS Mary Ann and was launched on 12 March 1909 at the New Atlantic Navy & Defence and commissioned on 9 August 1909. She had her maiden voyage on 17 August 1909 and, like her sister, was used on the Southampton-New York and Southampton-Halifax routes. The Marilyn had an improved steam engine system compared to the Mary Ann. However, due to problems with this system, the speed had to be reduced from 18 to 17 knots. In 1915, when she was converted from an auxiliary cruiser to a troopship, the problems were largely solved. In 1914, the Marilyn was used in the First World War, first as an auxiliary cruiser and finally as a troopship. On 4 August 1917, she was sunk near the island of Alderney by a German U-boat and capsized due to extensive damage to three compartments within 5 minutes and sank 7 minutes later. Of the 524 men on board, 243 died.
