In the late 1950's the need for a medium range Empire routes (MRE) was growing. BOAC had just ordered the 707, but these aircraft could not fulfill the necessary requirements for BOAC's routes to far-flung cities across the Empire. Vickers-Armstrong was the only British aircraft manufacturer to pursue a contract.
They developed the VC-10; with wide and low wings, flaps and leading edge slats, 4 rear mounted engines for extra ground clearance, wide low pressure tires, and advanced avionics like auto pilot. The VC-10 was highly advanced and perfectly optimised for routes to Africa.
Despite this VC-10's failed to beat the American competition and the British government took possession of the final VC-10s/

The RAF VC-10 was in use from 1965 until 1977 and later as an aerial refuelling tankers until 2013. Operated by no. 10 Squadron the VC-10 served on regular routes to Hong Kong, New York, and Singapore. The aircraft also served an important role as a VIP and diplomatic transport aircraft. When in service the VC-10 was favoured by Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, she used it extensively throughout her term. Quite ironically this aircraft was reportedly disliked by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ii, one of the many disagreements between the Crown and Mrs. Thatcher.
