At 1905, after the loss of the Russian-Japanese War, the Russian empire retired the S.S. Ushakov for seling to any interests.

The french company Compagnie Générale Transatlantique S.A. (CGT), also known as French Line, bought that ship early in 1906.

The plan was to rebuild it into a complete first class cruise ship as direct reaction to the success of the S.S. Prinzessin Victoria Luise of the Hamburg-America-Line.

The preperation and rebuild work needed over awhole year and in the early months of 1907 the now renamend S.S. Marie-Galante (named after an island and old french colony in the caribbean) started her new life as first class cruise ship.

She came just a few months too late to go into competition with her ment rival, because in december 1906 the S.S. Prinzessin Victoria Luise was lost to a grounding accident.

That´s why the French Line was skeptic if the market for cruise ships was something to invest into the future. From their side the success of the S.S. Marie-Galante was just from the gap the lost S.S. Prinzessin Victoria Luise leaved in the market and if they produced more cruise only ships there would be not enough customers to fill them.

Besides that the S.S. Marie-Galante stayed in service for the French Line until the outbrake of WWI in 1914 and made multiple cruises all arround the world.

After her rebuild she was fitted with three staircases, multiple spaceous first class cabins, three style cabins with private bath rooms and private living rooms, an open smoke room with a big glass dome, a dining room over two decks brightened by day light and cooled down by multiple fans, a modern gym room, a lounge with an open fire place, a bright veranda café, a spaceous library and a seperated childrens dining and play room. Also a barber shop for males and a coiffeur for the ladies on board was part of the offering onboard.

It is a highly modified and updated version of the S.S. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1892 and the later S.S. Ushakov 1904 version to fit into her new role as a cruise ship for the French Line.
