Hello again everyone!
I hope you all had a nice Christmas/New Year. After a very relaxing time, I'm back to uploading ships again, continuing with the American destroyers. Today we've got the Sims-class destroyer. Another development beyond the Mahan class, these were a return to form after the Gridley, Bagley, and Benham classes where the Americans went a different route with their destroyer design. Compared to the Mahans, certain things were improved upon in the Sims class, such as replacing the Mark XXI DP guns with a full suite of Mark XXX guns.
Also, you might notice the change in bridge structure which makes the Sims look very similar to the future Benson and Gleaves-class destroyers. Originally, the Sims had three banks of torpedoes like the Mahans, and five guns but one bank of torps and one gun was sacrificed in the name of stability and to upgrade the anti-aircraft. I've depicted the Sims in late-war condition, with a Measure 22 camouflage and modernised AA over the original design.
Statistics are as follows:
Length - 106 Blocks (not including extremities)
Beam - 11 Blocks (ditto)
Draught - 4 Blocks
Primary Armament: 4 x 127mm/38 Mark XXX DP Guns [4 x 1]
Anti-Aircraft Armament: Ditto + 4 x 40mm/56.3 Bofors QF Mark I Guns [2 x 2] and 4 x 20mm/70 Oerlikon Mark X Guns [4 x 1]
Torpedo Armament: 8 x 533mm Torpedoes [2 x 4]
I've used the World of Warships model as a baseline, albeit once again having to modernise it to suit the version I wished to depict. I hope you guys like it and keep an eye out for more! There are plenty of other US destroyers to come. Up next will be the Benson-class!
Until then, take care.
