Lore: The SS Culpeo left Liverpool on January 2, 1913, carrying 300 people to Newfoundland. After six uneventful days, the crew spotted an iceberg late on January 8. Despite trying to turn, the ship struck the iceberg, tearing open its hull. Water quickly flooded the ship.

The captain ordered distress calls and launched the lifeboats. Most passengers escaped safely while the crew worked to keep the ship running. At 1:18 AM on January 9, the SS Culpeo sank beneath the Atlantic.

A rescue ship arrived after sunrise and picked up the survivors. 278 people survived, while 22 lost their lives, mostly crew members and passengers trapped below deck. The disaster led to improved safety measures on Cunard's smaller ships, and the wreck is believed to rest southeast of Newfoundland.
