Lore: SS Newport began her life on May 1st 1935. After a year, she was launched on June 1st 1936. She began her maiden voyage on July 10th 1937 and was celebrated upon her arrival in New York City.
She was not the largest or fastest ship afloat at the time, but she was reliable.
When World War 2 began in September of 1939, Newport continued serving as a passenger liner. In the late afternoon on October 5th 1939, She was 11 miles from Cherbourg, France, westbound towards the United States with 300 passengers and 60 crew, a total of 360 aboard.
Without warning, and despite being a passenger liner, she was hit midship by a torpedo fired from a German submarine. A distress call was immediately sent out, which was received in Cherbourg. As water quickly flooded the large boiler and engine room, the boilers exploded, causing massive damage, as well as a loss of power.
People tried to launch the lifeboats, but there wasn’t any time. The ship was dying too fast. Minute by minute, the ship’s list to starboard grew and grew. 20 minutes after the attack, Newport capsized to starboard and slipped beneath the waves.
Of the 360 people aboard, 188 lost their lives. The 172 survivors clung to debris and wreckage as rescue ships arrived on the scene.
