After 3 years, I am now finally reviving this account with my latest ship, the beautiful paddle-steamer 'SS Ernst August'!
Beeing named after King Ernst August I. of Hanover she was built by the Friedrichswerke in the free-state of Friedrichsburg between 1847 and 1849 and was the first ship to sail for the 'Königlich Hannoverscher Seedienst' (Royal Hanoveranian Line). She sailed between the cities of Emden and New York with stopping in Liverpool on the way. She took this route, among with some trips to the Kingdom of Sardinia, until 1866 when, after the Austro-Prussian War she was given to the Prussian merchant fleet due to the Seedienst beeing temporarily dissolved, and took over the route from Danzig to Saint Petersburg and Stockholm. In 1869, whilst waiting in the harbour of Danzig one of her boilers exploded, killing several and damaging the ship severely. She was then, poorly repaired, bought by the Prussian Navy who used her as a practising vessel and later, in 1870, sunk her in the Bay of Danzig, seeling her fate.
