May have worked on older versions, but as of now, pumpkin and melon stems do not bear fruit with a solid block directly above them.

melons and pumpkin stems will grow "fruit" if theres a block above it it just tks alil longer to grow it so stacking it 10 or higher will give u a more thn a good amount of pumpkins or melons
