It kind of surprised me that I didn't find any similar project here on Planet Minecraft. And as I thought of building R2D2 before I decided to go for it. And this is the result :) I built most of it in MCEdit and made small things in-game. The whole body is hollow and so I made a base in there, which also contains a mob trap (which is most effective during day and when you are not near the drop collection point, but rather outside the base).

Building this was quite easy. I just used the basic features/tools of MCEdit and some reference pictures. So I think a step by step tutorial isn't really necessary, as there are really good tutorials for MCEdit out there.
Your project is really cool, nice idea
