SU-2 Soviet Aircraft.

Su-2 was a Soviet light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft used in the early stages of World War II. It was the first aircraft designed by Pavel Sukhoi. The basic design received an engine and armament upgrade and was modified to serve as a ground-attack aircraft.

In 1936, Joseph Stalin issued a requirement for a multi-purpose fighter aircraft. Codenamed “Ivanov,” the aircraft had to be capable of performing reconnaissance tasks and then attacking the targets it had located. [1] Pavel Sukhoi was working at the Tupolev Design Bureau (Tupolev OKB) at the time, and he designed the “Ivanov” aircraft under the tutelage of designer Andrei Tupolev. The resulting ANT-51 flew on August 25, 1937, with pilot Mikhail Gromov at the controls. Powered by a 610 kW (820 hp) Shvetsov M-62 air-cooled radial engine, the ANT-51 reached 403 km/h at 4700 m. [1]

This was considered insufficient, but since the basic design was sound, it was decided to retest it with a more powerful engine. Equipped with a 746 kW (1,000 hp) Tumansky M-87 engine, the ANT-51 reached 468 km/h at 5600 m and was accepted into production as the BB-1 (Russian: Ближний Бомбардировщик, romanized: Blizhniy Bombardirovschik, “short-range bomber”). [1] In 1940, the aircraft was renamed Su-2 and the unreliable M-87 engine was replaced by a Tumansky M-88.[1] This lightweight version with an M-88B engine reached a speed of 512 km/h in tests.

The Su-2 was of mixed construction. The fuselage was semi-monocoque with wooden beams covered with plywood. The wings were made of duralumin and steel, with fabric-covered control surfaces operated by rods. The pilot and gunner were protected by 9 mm thick steel plates. The conventional landing gear was retractable, including the tail wheel. [1] Built in series from 1940 to 1942, a total of 910 Su-2 aircraft were produced, making it Sukhoi's most successful aircraft for decades. [2] The aircraft stood out for its spacious cockpit structure, which improved the pilot's field of vision, and an internal bomb bay that reduced wind drag and thus helped to improve the fighter's speed. This model served as the basis for the design of the Su-6 and Su-8 armored assault aircraft, as well as the Su-1 fighter. [3] The aircraft's success led to the team of engineers led by Sukhoi becoming independent as a design bureau and moving to aircraft manufacturing plant No. 135 in Kharkiv, in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
