Syros is an island I had made for a small survival server.
Total land area: 1,369,065 square blocks

ehBzVpng

The island is completely honeycombed with tunnels and small caverns. None of these tunnels break the surface and the reason for this is two-fold; first, the server didn't want the tunnels open to the surface and secondly, I feel that it kind of ruins the look of the terrain at times. Personally, I'd rather play on a map that looks nice and is harder to do things then a map that looks bad and is easier to do things. Your house, while it may look fantastic, won't look very good with a poor landscape around it.

When you get low enough in the tunnels you'll break into active lava tubes and, obviously, this is where most of the important ores are.

All the trees have decaying leaves so you shouldn't have floating leaves everywhere.

There is, currently, no End portal in this map, but I was planning on adding a custom reimagined Stronghold at some point.

I'd also like this to be a sort of work in progress adding things that players ask for in the map; be it old structures or natural formations. Just give me an idea you think would be cool on this map and I'll see about adding it.

Additional Notes

You can view a lot more pictures at my Imgur album for this build, found here.

You can also download a version of the map that is in cheats enabled Creative here.

Looks best in Conquest since it uses the extra stone, soul-sand, and clay meta-values, but it can be used in any pack and still look good.
Progress: 100% Complete

Update 2 : 10/14/2013 1:18:01 pm10/14/13

Readjusted the ore frequency once again to fine-tune it.

Added sugar canes, and melon/pumpkin patches.

Update 1 : 10/09/2013 3:36:23 pm10/09/13

Updated the frequency of ores that show in the cave and cavern walls; should show up just as a few ores here and there.

Added ore veins throughout the island that, once found, should contain significantly more ores.

I wanted a gorgeous land to represent where my Minecraft Machinima took place. This fit the bill. It is fantastic! Check out your world in action when you get the chance!

Sorry to ask, but what meta-deta blocks did you use in the conquest pack to create those water reeds you can see along the shores? As in what is the ID for them? Love the detailing you've done along the shorelines of this map. Really awesome stuff man!

The reeds in the water?
Those are added naturally by the Better Leaves and Grass mod; no meta-data or anything to do with the Conquest resource pack apart from the textures.

So, in the lastest update I started digging down again and promptly hit a iron and coal vein, setting up my further digging. Some melons I found nearby helped with the hunger and soon I was at bedrock level again.

Veins are still strong when you get very close to bedrock. And a single diamond vein got me 21 diamonds setting me up for some time to come. I didn't follow the veins to see if they are still as consecutive as before, but that single dig down provided me with plenty ore, gems and coal. Might be a good idea to tone it down even more, especially with the diamond veins.

The important change was in the second update, the addition of ores and gems on the walls of the lava caverns. They were disapointing barren before. The iron veins are good, everything else is quite plentyful now. Though, I actually like it that way ;)

--

Did another dig. Even the iron veins are too much.

Also I found a huge cavern, darkness everywhere around you, they are way more dangerous than the lava caves. Had to fight for my live with zombies, skeletons and creepers comming from all around.

But now that I have explored a lot of the island with my quick steed, I have noticed ... THERE IS NO SUGAR CANE TO BE FOUND :(

That means no paper ergo no maps ... That would be the next thing for me to do, make maps of the island.

I completely forgot about that. I'll add that right away. I'll be uploading a new version today with the gold ore near the surface removed, and sugarcane added.

I'm reluctant to restart again, but I guess I can do the dig-to-bedrock routine on a second map.

Anyway, I realy enjoy the unique survival challenge. It's nice to play in a world that actually looks kind of natural.

Oh, I wasn't expecting you to have to start over or anything! But if you'd like, sure. Also, to make getting started a little easier I planted a couple melon/pumpkin patches around the island.

Saddles and horse armor are obtainable! :)

There are the new chests in the nether fortresses that also contain them.
This time I found a horse and a donkey. Now I can finaly ride the horse ...

Food is still hard to come by in the start. The most accessible (though boring) is probably fish, just need to kill a few spiders for the string. Growing wheat takes way too much time and animals depend on the luck of the random spawn. I'm still looking for a second cow to start breeding them, having killed the first two I found for the meat :(

Just tried the updated map. Started digging a diagonal shaft down and soon hit a little cavern. There were single coal, iron and gold to be found. It's bit high up for gold, compared to vanilla, but who cares. Ores!

Continued further down and hit some veins. Coal and iron, yeah :) Got quite a bit of iron, more than a stack from two veins I encountered. Also hit another (smaller) cavern with redstone, coal and gold.

So, from that little excursion I can say ore frequency looks good now. Better a bit too much than not enough.

Anyway, I'll dig down all the way and do more exploring later, don't have time now. Will report back.

---

Edit: Ok, now I continued digging down and hit the lava cavern level. Close to that level I hit a few iron, coal, lapis and gold veins and then I even found a diamond vein. And the lava caves are sprinkled with diamond, iron, coal, emerald, redstone and lapis blocks. So once you get down there you are set.

Having that much diamonds is kind a crazy, but I love it :)

Thanks for checking it out again. I will remove the gold from the first level of veins so they won't appear so high up in the ground. I'll also adjust the ores to just a tiny bit below where I currently have them in order to make them not so plentiful, but still more abundant than the first time. Hopefully this will have enough ore while still being challenging.

I love the mining frenzy I currently get into, one vein leading to the next and next and next. But toning it down a bit isn't a bad idea.

Mining at lava level is plentiful but it's not without risk, there are lots of hidden lava pockets and the silverfish blocks can make for a bad surprise if you are not vigilant. It's a lot of fun.
Awesome! :D How did you make that map?

Hello, I approve of this map. Had A TON fun playing survival with my 2 brothers. I really enjoyed the difficulty of finding ores in this one.

I was wondering, how did you get the "tree texture" on all 6 sides?

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! Would you like to see an increase in the amount of ores scattered throughout the island? Also, are there any improvements you'd suggest adding?

The tree texture is an old meta-value from a long time ago. 17:12 is Oak, 17:13 Spruce, and so on.

you could add a marsh, like, a wide lake with only 1 block deep water. it would look cool. the ground could have soul sand so that players walking on that slow, humid and uncomfortable ambient would feel in an inospit land (wich is how i imagine this island)
